Step-by-Step Guide to Setting DNS Entries

Windows

Open Notepad as Administrator:

  • Press Windows Key.
  • Type Notepad.
  • Right-click on Notepad and select Run as administrator.

Open the Hosts File:

  • In Notepad, click File > Open.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
  • Select All Files from the dropdown menu to see the hosts file.
  • Select hosts and click Open.

Add DNS Entries:

  • Scroll to the bottom of the file and add the following lines:
104.18.18.242 fanfiction.net

Save and Exit:

  • Press Control + O to save the file.
  • Press Enter to confirm.
  • Press Control + X to exit nano.

Flush DNS Cache:

  • In Terminal, type sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and press Enter.

Linux

Open Terminal:

  • This varies slightly by distribution, but generally, you can open Terminal from the applications menu or by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T.

Edit the Hosts File:

  • In Terminal, type sudo nano /etc/hosts and press Enter.
  • Enter your password when prompted.

Add DNS Entries:

  1. I think you are going to lose a lot of readers and writers this way…..what is causing the outage anyway?

    1. The outage appears to be due to a disruption with Fanfiction.net upstream DNS provider, which they are still working to resolve.
